AMBLYOPIA (LAZY EYE)

Amblyopia is commonly known as lazy eye.  Amblyopia is a loss or lack of vision, usually in one eye, caused by conditions that affect the normal development of vision.  Lazy eye needs to be diagnosed between birth and early school age.  It is during these early years that the brain may choose to not develop the weaker eye permanently.

Lazy eye is not always easy to detect. A child with a lazy eye doesn’t necessarily have an eye that looks lazy.  It’s important to bring children in for a comprehensive eye exam by the age of 1 and sooner if there is a family history of any eye condition or disease. BLEPHARITIS

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelashes and eyelids.  It is very common and one of the most common and quite stubborn eye condition.  It is usually a result of poor eyelid hygiene, a bacterial infection, an allergic reaction or abnormalities in glad function.

Blepharitis can be controlled but not cured.  There are treatments that can be used to help combat the side effects.  Treatment includes reducing the number of bacteria along the eyelids and opening plugged glands.

CATARACTS

Cataracts are the worlds leading cause of blindness. Cataracts are caused when the normally clear lens becomes cloudy.

A cataract starts out small and may even have little effect on your vision. As the cataract progresses it becomes more and more difficult to perform routine tasks. When cataracts begin to disrupt daily life your eye care professional might recommend cataract surgery, a common and successful procedure done in the U.S.

COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME

Computer Vision Syndrome is often associated with a stiff neck, watery eyes, stiff shoulder, and a headache while working at a computer.  These symptoms are typically due to improper posture, dry eyes, poorly corrected vision, and eye muscle coordination.

Most computer monitors sit about 20-26 inches away from your eyes. Your regular glasses might not be the best option for computer use.  This distance is considered intermediate distance. It’s further away than what you need for reading but closer than what you need for driving.  Special computer lenses make a much larger intermediate viewing area for you to work at your desk and computer.  Stone Canyon Eye Care can help you determine if these specialty lenses are a good fit for you and your lifestyle.

DRY EYE SYNDROME

Dry Eye Syndrome refers to the amount of tear and the quality of tears that you have every time you blink.  Tears help to moisten, clean and protect our eyes, washing away unwanted dust and other microorganisms.  If this protective coating isn’t working to its full potential your eyes can feel gritty and uncomfortable. You may even feel a burning sensation or be sensitive to light. In some cases, vision can become blurry and out of focus.

STRABISMUS

Strabismus is when the eyes are not aligned causing the eyes to look cross-eyed. This commonly occurs when some of the muscles in the eye are not properly working together to keep the eyes aligned.

Strabismus is usually diagnosed during the childhood years and affects around 4 percent of children. There is no prevention available, although if treated early it’s complications can be avoided.  If you notice any symptoms please contact Stone Canyon Eye Care to schedule an exam.
